Louth- Featuring Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula

Back in the day before the troubles erupted along the border, excursions into the Cooley peninsula on a weekend were a regular thing. As small children, the lure of a Cavan cola and a packet of Tayto were sufficient to guarantee a car­full of uncomplaining kids jammed pre-seatbelts either into the back or bunched into the front bench seat of our trusty Peugeot 404. First stop was Carlingford, where we would explore the ruins and search the foreshore for interesting bits of flotsam. Then off to Omeath for cockles and clams before the return journey took us through the Cooley mountains and on to Dundalk and the Fairways hotel for burgers and chips.
