The Gap of Dunloe (from the Irish Dún Lóich, meaning ‘Lóich’s stronghold’), also recorded as Bearna an Choimín (meaning “gap of the commonage or “gap of the little hollow”), is a narrow mountain pass, running north-south that separates the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range in the west, from the Purple Mountain range in the east. It is one of Kerry’s most popular tourist destinations on account of its scenery.
Best explored by foot, bike or jaunting car, the Gap of Dunloe is one of those places where you kind of feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Many years ago I was attending a wedding in Killarney and we took a drive out towards the “Gap”. About a mile short I rounded a corner to see a man standing in the middle of the road, franticly waving his arms. I slowed down, rolled down the window and looked at him expecting him to tell me to call an ambulance or help dig his car out of a ditch.
He leaned in, tipped his cap to the missus and without any further delay, got to the point. “Would ye like to hire a horse?” he queried in the broadest Kerry brogue.
If “never miss a genuine opportunity” isn’t the official Kerry motto, it’s one of the few times the Kingdom has missed a trick.
