A Bit of History

The sound of the Curlew’s screech especially at night has long been regarded as a sure harbinger of rain. To see them rise to the east and then fly west was further warning that frosty weather was on its way.

The Curlew is a Winter visitor to Irish wetlands and breeds in small numbers on bogland and floodplains. Due to changes in farming practices, numbers have dwindled substantially in recent years.
