A Bit of History

Situated at the heart of the county on a bend in the River Fergus, Ennis is the capital of County Clare. It’s a historical town and is one of Clare’s most characterful and picturesque centres – with its narrow, winding streets, historical buildings and busy market town atmosphere.

The name Ennis comes from the Irish word ‘Inis’, meaning ‘island’ and refers to an island formed between two courses of the River Fergus on which the Franciscan Abbey was built.
