A Bit of History

Originally formed as a royal hunting Park in the 1660s and opened to the public in 1747, The Phoenix Park is the largest enclosed public park in any  European capital. The Park is also home to the Zoological Gardens, Áras an Uachtaráin,  Victorian flower gardens, and a herd of fallow deer, while it hosts walkers, runners, cyclists, polo riders, cricketers, hurlers and numerous festivals and events inside its 11km perimeter.

Pictured is the Wellington monument (or Testimonial, having been erected while the duke was alive) – built to celebrate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. who was a Dublin native.
