A Bit of History

Situated north of Terenure and Rathgar and directly south of the Grand Canal at Clanbrassil Street, Harold’s Cross was the site of executions up to the 18th Century. That may be the origin of the name, with the cross being the gallows (maintained by the Archbishop of Dublin during the 14th Century!) It may also mark the boundary of the holdings of the Viking Harold family who lived in the Rathfarnham area in the middle ages.

A Note from the Artist

Like many teenagers at the time, Harold’s Cross first came to my attention as the venue for the world’s longest running continuous screening (21 years) of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the local fleapit, the Classic cinema. Sadly that cult screening and the cinema itself have long closed.
