A Bit of History

The seaside village of Ardmore in County Waterford is just 50km from Cork, Clonmel or Waterford city. The name comes from the Irish Aird Mhór, meaning “Great Height”. and is reputed to be the oldest Christian settlement in Ireland being founded by Saint Declan around 350–450 AD.

Ardmore’s cliffs, harbour, village, and golden sands are a magnet for visitors on a balmy summer’s day, but with five beaches to choose from, there’s room for everyone. Just above the village stand the historic Round Tower and Cathedral which overlook Ardmore Bay from the site of St. Declan’s monastery. Above the harbour, the award-winning Cliff House Hotel attracts discerning holidaymakers who come for the sea view suites and dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant. Beyond the hotel, the cliff walk, a 5k waymarked route beckons. This circular hike runs by Ram Head passing the Coastguard Station (1867), the Castle (1867) the WWII Lookout Post (1940) and back into the village… just in time for a pint and a toasted sandwich!
