Greenore Lighthouse

Built to designs by George Halpin Senior in 1830, Greenore lighthouse is unused and in a sorry state. It stands a mere 11 metres tall and was built to highlight the southern entrance of Carlingford Lough and also Greenore Port, the only privately owned port in the Republic. Like many harbour lights, the array of lighting on the quayside has rendered it redundant.

Greenore  itself is situated on the southern shore of Carlingford Lough, with spectacular views of the Mourne Mountains to the north, and Slieve Foye to the west. The entire village is an architectural conservation area and contains a range of outstanding and well preserved Victorian residential and industrial buildings built by the London and North West Railway Company to house their port and railway workers (the railway terminal and ferry port was officially opened in 1873). It is reputed to be the only completely planned village in Ireland and at the time of its design was considered state of the art.

The railway station was built inside a magnificent Hotel on the quayside with luxury passenger liners sailing regularly for Holyhead in Wales. A first class passenger could leave Euston Station in London at 8:45pm and arrive in Belfast at 9:52am including a four hour voyage from Holyhead to Greenore. The railway closed in 1951 with the ferry services ceasing soon after. By 1964, the then disused port was being used to fit out the ships used for the pirate radio stations Radio Caroline and Radio Atlanta.
