Cluain Tarbh, or in translation, “meadow of the bull, ” stretches along the northern coast of Dublin Bay between Fairview and the Bull Island.
Strangely, it lacks a distinctive centre, probably as a result of its origins as fishing community. There are two small shopping areas in the village, one on the coast road between St Laurences Road and Seaview Road and the other further along the shore at “the Sheds”, located at the bottom of Vernon Avenue.
The major historical claim of the area is of course, the Battle of Clontarf which as every good student knows took place in 1014 and in which Brian Ború, High King of Ireland, defeated the Vikings of Dublin and their allies.
The famous Clontarf baths have recently been restored and now house a restaurant and swimming lido.
