A Bit of History

The village of Drumcondra was the central area of the ancient Parish of Clonturk. The area has always been part of the main northern route into the city. Indeed, the well known Cat and Cage Pub on the on the corner of Church Avenue was the site of an old postal stop and the point at which rebels of the 1798 rebellion commandeered a postal cart in order to signal to others in North County Dublin to revolt. The area is well served as regards sporting venues hosting the GAA flagship, Croke Park and Shelbourne’s home ground, Tolka Park.

The Royal Canal winds its way through the area on its 145km journey to the river Shannon and at Binn’s bridge by the second lock, a forlorn figure memorialises Brendan Behan who immortalised the canal in verse in his celebrated “the Auld Triangle.”
