A Bit of History

The old joke that Glasnevin is the dead centre of Dublin was probably first cracked by Saint Mobhí back in the 4th century. He’s the guy who is generally credited as the founder of a monastery which put this Northside settlement on the map. The Botanic Gardens were added to Glasnevin when the Royal Dublin Society were handed the land by parliament in 1790 for the express purpose of creating a new type of garden, fit to house the novel tropical plants now being brought back to Europe from across the Empire. Prospect Cemetery or Glasnevin Cemetary as it’s more popularly referred to, is the most historically notable burial place in the country and the last resting place of a host of historical figures including Michael CollinsEamon DeValeraCharles Stewart Parnell and Arthur Griffith.
